1 year, a whole new world: Happy Birthday, Lucy!

cereal-head.jpgMy Lucy,

It’s 9:58 a.m., and you’ve already received three e-cards and 4 5 6 emails wishing you Happy Birthday. If you’ve made this much of a sweet impression on Mummy’s friends, can you imagine how you’ve changed my and Daddy’s life this past year?

We laugh more. This month you’re all about waving. You wave at Spencer, you wave at invisible things outside, you wave at me when I leave the room. You need to work on your timing though, as your arm starts flapping after Daddy closes the door, or after you leave a party and we’re walking up the stairs.

polar_bea.jpgWe run more. You are everywhere now. You’re grabbing the dog bowls, climbing bookcases, scaling the dishwasher, tossing socks in the bathtub, carrying paper from room to room, inching up counters and desperately trying to see what’s up there.

We play more. We play puppets and music table and look under the couch and singing Hakuna Matata and where’s Lucy’s freckle and give BooBoo hugs and saucer/jumper and chase the ball. Repeat x infinity.

We trifinger_smile.JPGp more. Seriously, we need to work on the toy-picking up. If I kick one of those nesting cups across the floor again, ball_mirror.JPGor trip on a stuffed star one more time, you may find yourself buried in the red toy bucket.

We love more. Ohgoodlord sometimes I want to barf with the love going on around here. I want to squeeze your guts out several times a day, and have melted into the floor 895 times since you started giving hugs this month. And when your face breaks into a smile when Daddy comes home, our house is filled with rainbows and angels. Neighbours line up at the end of the driveway and point at the hearts farting out the front door.

This month you are starting to cruise a little bit. You have a special voice and words reserved for BooBoo — it sounds like striped_smile.JPG“awwruh, baarunah, annumah,” and happens in the moments before you violently throw yourself upon him. You know several toys (baby, fish, socks) and body parts (nose, toes, hair) by name.

You’ve also started daycare. Thankfully this has gone incredibly well. You are so loved by the other kids, who mother you so much Debbie has to watch they don’t smother you. You never cry. You sleep two hours+. You pumpkin.JPGeat everything. Thank you for making this transition so easy for Mummy.

As part of your annual review, here is some constructive criticism: diaper changes will not kill you. Keep your hands away from the poop. Hats stay on the head. Soap must be rinsed out of hair. Babies do not eat out of dog food dishes. Fridges will bite you.

I am not much of a spiritual person beyond believing everything in life happens for a reason. But since having you, I’ve airplane-spoons.JPGcome to think that women carry around the souls of their children long before they are born. This sounds hopelessly cheesy, especially coming from me of all people, but I feel like you were meant to be, that I stroller-smile.JPGknew you before I held you in my arms for the first time at 4:15 a.m. a year ago. All of my life experiences leading up to that very moment prepared me in some way for being your Mummy, whether I knew it or not.

And as much as life has taught me, you have taught me more. I am more confident and self aware today. tongue-cereal.JPGI see the good and the bad, I see what it truly important to me: family, friends, our planet, being an bathing_suit.JPGhonest, loving, generous, thoughtful person. I made some big changes with your help, because you’ve solidified my belief that life is too short to be miserable.

It’s fascinating that you’ve been such a catalyst, considering your vocabulary consists of dog, duck and dad (also apple, cereal, hair, milk, lights, more and telephone with signing).

    Happy 1st Birthday, Miss Lucy!

I hope that you will treasure the love and devotion of your Mom & Dad as demonstrated (and shared with so many family members and friends in the “Life with Lucy” blog) over the past 365 days of your life. Hearing of the joys and challenges of new parenthood with your Mom & Dad has made me remember the wonderful days of being a Mom to your cousin Ted. I know that the next days and months will be equally full of love, learning and fun as you journey onto birthday # 2.

    With much love,

    (Great) Auntie Janice

    Happy Birthday, Lucy!

Well, your mom did it again. She made me cry once more at her beautiful description of you. I know what she means about your soul. One just has to look into those beautiful eyes of yours to realize you have a very old soul. It’s a mommy thing I guess.

I’ve enjoyed reading about your life so far and it is the inspiration for the journal I started for my own sweet baby. I hope you will read your mommy’s column when you are old enough to understand it. It’s obvious your mommy loves you.

    Happy Birthday little one.

Happy Birthday to my wonderful, beautiful grand daughter. It is so hard to believe that it is a whole year ago that I was flying down the highway to see you in the hospital on the day you were born.
You bring so much joy to everyone and we all love you to pieces!!!

    Dear Lucy:

Happy 1st birthday sweetheart. It is so hard to believe that you have reached this milestone already. When you are old enough I know that you probably roll your eyes when Mommy and Daddy tell your life experiences for the world to see. Just remember how much we all love you so much.

    Dear Miss Lucy,
Happy First Birthday from Beautiful B.C.!
You were a much-anticipated baby, even from way out here, where your Mommy and Daddy visited before you were born! (We so thought you would be named Victoria!)
You have not only brought light and laughter to your immediate family, but to those of us many miles away, as we read the daily tales of Lucy.
We’re much honoured to have met you, and more honoured to keep reading about you every day.
    Happy Birthday, little Lucy.
    Love Pat and Rob
