The new work world
My new job is work-from-home, a somewhat new venture. One summer during university I was a health reporter for a newsletter, and it almost killed me being by myself all day. But somehow this gig is different — I think the pay, the half time, the regular correspondence from co-workers, the much-more-challenging work, the flexibility, a great boss and having a family relying on my paycheque make it easier.
So here are my top 12 reasons why not leaving the house for work is sweet:
- I may never get dressed again
- I can attend (conference) meetings in my pajamas. And I have!
- I watch Golden Girls at lunch every. single. day.
- If I wanted to surf porn, I could and not worry about getting busted by my boss
- No packing a lunch
- Unlimited hot tea
- This week I renewed our mortgage, signed papers, organized my pension and dealt with lawyers and didn’t worry about doing it on company time
- No commute
- No annoying co-workers (just Spencer. He farts a lot, though. I’m thinking of firing him.)
- Showers, every day, with lots of hot water and no baby screaming from the door. Bliss!
- Household chores can get done during the day and not squeezed into the 0.2 seconds of the night after Lucy goes to bed
- Setting my own hours means I finish at 4 pm (or 1 pm! or 11 am!) at the latest and have more than two whole hours just to playplayplay with m’girl. If only for this, it’s the best scenario ever
Why it can kinda sucks ass:
- It’s so damn QUIET!
- Spencer is not good for two-way, stimulating conversation. (See #9, above)
- No annoying co-workers to gossip about and with
- It’s a lot easier to get distracted when there’s no one here to keep you in line
I’m very comforted seeing List 1 is much longer than List 2…

I am very upset with you that I am #4 on the ’sucks ass’ list. Personally, I think it should go on the ’sweet’ list. I’m glad I have you to distract me during the day. Although, to be fair, I’m in a union and can not be easily fired. Don’t tell my boss I just said that.
I can also fill the role of #3 on the ’sucks ass’ list. I’m just an email away. I’ll start gossiping with you about my co-workers so you don’t miss it.
Maybe instead of firing Spencer, you can just move his office farther away!
Love the lists….hilarious! Honestly made my day.
You’ve pretty much summed up my days
I think my biggest struggle is keeping focused – blogs are very shiny and distracting!
I’d love a work from home job!
