The Ugly Baby Clothes Contest
We’ve all got one: the hideous outfit Aunt Myrtle sent when Junior was born. The yellow-brown-orange shirt with rainbows and watermelons and matching green-striped pants.
Now is your chance to un-stuff that monstrosity from your baby’s closet! Welcome to the Ugly Baby Clothes Contest, in honour of the hideous panda shirt.
The panel of expert judges (ok, it’s just me, my friend Jen who’s a mom and my cousin Ted, who’s a dude with great taste, but we DO have Leanne, the store manager for Once Upon a Child in Ajax, who sees her fair share of eye-rolling outfits) is anxiously awaiting pics of ridiculous baby clothes so we can gasp in terror and then give you prizes for your hardship.
There are fabulous gifts for the winner and runner-ups (along with the notoriety): a $50 gift basket from Mom & Kid Stuff in Pickering, a $25 gift certificate for Once Upon a Child in Ajax, a special gift from The Cuddly Bunny in Port Perry, a $20 gift certificate from Natural Earth Tones in Oshawa, Baby Einstein toys, Baby Mum-Mum snacks, the infamous airplane spoons, and much more.
Here’s the free, easy, fun way to enter:
- contest is open to anyone, anywhere — this is the Internet, after all
- outfits don’t have to be your baby’s — pillage anyone’s closet
- clothes must be sizes 0-24 months
- any individual article of clothing or complete outfit is accepted
- choose from any decade — we are an anti-ageist contest, so if there are photos of you, your hubby, your sister in a ridiculous ensemble from 1973, send it in
- enter as many times as you’d like
- digital/scanned images only, at the highest quality
- photos can be just the offending outfit, or a baby/doll wearing it for full affect
- email images to info@durhamregionbaby.com, including your name, location and the story behind the clothes
- contest closes Wednesday, May 23, 2007

Damn. I just donated away a whole garbage bag full of baby clothes to the Salvation Army and I swear there were one or two outfits in there that had a chance of winning this contest, including one outfit complete with clown worthy polka dots and a fru fru colar.

Oh, that sounds like I need to go dig in our attic. When sorting clothes into age-piles, I remember I made piles for 4, 5, 6 and one labelled “hell no” (literally). Some of the stuff that I put in there made me cringe. I’m sure there are baby-size outfits that would have made it in there in the earlier years.
