Soggy cute
Last night I was trying on some clothes in the living room while Lucy watched The Backyardigans (a new obsession…did you know they are coming to town in April?).
I had slipped on a fuchsia sweater when Lucy suddenly turned to me with a eye-crinkling grin and said, “Cute, Mama!”
Not many people have said things to make my mouth drop (Jesus Camp a huge exception), but that comment actually made my knees give out. I slumped to the couch and stared at her slack jawed.
“Oh, thank you so much, sweetie! It’s so nice you said that!”
Then I got down on my knees and smothered her with hugs and kisses, to the point of, “No, Mama, deeewn’t!”
I think that has to be the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me, because it came from an innocent 2-year-old with no perceptions or biases (at least, not acknowledged like you and I have).
I am blocking out the fact that this morning she also called a soggy wad of cereal stuck to the bottom of her sock cute. We mothers take what we can get.
