Eczema help
Right when the weather started to turn warm, we discovered the persistent and reoccurring diaper rash Lucy was battling was not, in fact, a rash, but eczema.
Our daycare provider, Julia, diagnosed it. Her son suffered from the exact same rash in the same spot when the heat kicked in.
We weren’t terribly surprised, as Eric has small patches, and it, too, flares up in heat/humidity, as opposed to winter. Different water and soaps can exacerbate it, too.
But, man, is eczema ever a pain to treat in the diaper zone. Mostly because it’s almost always covered up. Moving to underwear has made a big difference, but Lucy’s still in a diaper for nap and overnight.
We’re currently treating it with some hydrocortisone (sparingly) when it’s REALLY bad, but mostly with a thin layer of our favourite All Things Jill Baby Bum Balm. This acts as a barrier to seal in moisture, and helps lessen the irritation from acidic poops.
But even when the patches aren’t red, they’re still raised, and can flare up from the smallest thing.
Does anyone have other treatment suggestions? Creams? Procedures? I’d really appreciate any suggestions.

We’ve used hydrocortizone on the kids when they get Eczema.
The doctor also gave me a medicated cream that’s a miracle worker on sore bits.
clotrimaderm:hyderm 1% AA is what it says on the bottle. The sorest little bits get relief from this wonderkind. You apply a very thin layer and then put vasoline or zinc oxide on it to “keep it in place” the rash clears up in no time.
I’ve used it on both kids - apparently it’s a combination of hydrocortizone and Canestin (yes the stuff WE use sometimes). It’s also very effective on healing bug bites.
Also, Aveeno makes a kids oatmeal bath soak that is very effective. It calms the skin and it’s good for Eczema and other rashes. If you can’t find the kids’ version, use the adult version but only put in half a pouch.
Hope that helps. Poor little Lucy …
Ask your doctor about Fucidin H Cream. It sounds like you need something perscription based. It runs around $40 if you don’t have a drug plan. Jayde sufferes from atopic dermatitis and eczema in the anal area. It can flare to the point of painful blisters. Baby tylenol or motrin helps with the pain. We’ve been dealing with this for two summers and we were in the midst of almost successfully potty training her before this last flare up. It has caused a setback as sitting on anything without the padding of a pull up is too painful for her. And I don’t want to force it and I need her to get better so I’ve let her go to pull ups all the time. She’s really in discomfort and right now, it’s more about what she she needs than what I want (no more $ on these damn pull ups).
I hope this helps.
There’s this cream called Renew that I buy from Melaleuca and from what I’ve heard it’s AMAZING for Eczema. A family member lastnight actually said that her youngest had it really bad and she tried Renew (totally skeptical) and sure enough in a couple of days she saw a huge difference. I have some samples that I could mail you if you want…. since I’m still in the great white north. Just email me your addy!
Lansinoh is my all-time favourite for use on anything rash-related. Story has had some ugly little eczema spots that refused to heal with hydrocortisone, but Lansinoh cleared them up within a couple of days. It’s inexpensive, natural and awesome.
I use Aquaphor on all kinds of rashes and my son and granddaughter both have eczema and they both use, especially on their red cheeks.
Hi,
Is Lucy in pain?
I know all the advice is great and it helps to have a quasi-diagnosis but a follow up with your doctor is a good idea. I’m a pediatric nurse. Often in diapered toddlers and babies, skin irritations or infections can be misdiagnosed by parents as other anomolies even though no symptoms may be present. Atopic dermatitis should be ruled out because if left untreated, it can result in infection and reocurring flare-ups.
Best,
Sara
Can it possibly be related to a food allergy? My friend’s son’s eczema is related to food allergies (diary, eggs and nuts in his case).
eczema has been a life long struggle for me and most recently i have found relief only through proper diet, removing heat/moisture from my skin and the right moisturizer. we’ll talk tomorrow!
Hi I also have the kind of eczema that blisters and heat (and damn near everything else) makes it worse. I found using Nature Clean laundry detergent helped. Also unscented baby soap for washing is pretty mild. There are also calendula creams that help (healthfood stores). Thompson’s Homeopathic is very good. And the biggest culprit for me was diet - I had to knock off dairy, eggs, wheat and some other things- and that helped control it a lot. Don’t be afraid to use hydrocortisone to get it under control so that you can manage it. It probably is pretty painful being in the diaper area. Good luck - My Naturopath is great if you want her name - I’t Erica Buckley, she works out of Whitby and Port Perry.
