How alternative treatment sparked a career: A Mompreneur Profile

I’m a pretty natural girl, but homeopathy has always intimidated me. And, to be perfectly honest, I’ve been skeptical. But then I met Keri and read the story of how the practice essentially cured her son, and I’m definitely going to give it a try. Thought you’d like to see what it’s all about, too, and read Keri’s interesting background in the Mompreneur Profile.

Name: Keri Wilkins, 37

Family: I’m a single mom to two boys, 7 and 9, and my daughter is 13 (going on 20!).Keri.jpg

Work: Homeopathic practitioner, Ajax (serving Durham Region)

How you started your career: When my first son was born, he was healthy thriving baby. At nine weeks, he was hospitalized for RSV, and whopping cough. From that moment on, he lost weight, and had a chronic cough, and wheeze. For the next 10 months, we spent a lot of time at the doctors. He was on two puffers, still had cough, chronic colds etc. At a year old, we were told that he had allergy-induced asthma, and was allergic to cats, dust, milk, trees, grass etc.

The turning point for me was when I asked the doctor how long he had to be on the puffers, and he said, ‘Forever. We will change them as needed as he grows but this is something he’s going to need his whole life.”

I could not accept that.

I went looking for alternative treatments for him. We started with chiropractic, and it did well to heal the ear infections and some other minor reactions he was having, but it only went so far. My chiropractor suggested seeing a homeopath which I had never heard of before, but was willing to do anything at this point.

The change in him was nothing short of miraculous! With in five days of taking the remedy she prescribed, he stopped coughing, and steadily got better from that point on. That was almost eight years ago now, and he has not needed a puffer since. It took about six months of treatment, and since then has been back to his homeopath a few times for follow up visits to help keep him on track.

I decided to study homeopathy, which I had been using for acute illnesses at home for a few years at this point. I attended the Toronto School of Homeopathic Medicine, and graduated in 2007.

What are some of the common ailments you treat: ADHD, eczema, bed wetting, anxiety, reactions to vaccines, pregnancy-related symptoms (morning sickness etc) and breastfeeding difficulties. I also see lots of kids acutely for colds/flus/ sore throats, ear infections, bladder infections, chicken pox etc.

Goals: I have many things I would like to see and do with my business, most revolving around empowering women to be the best they can be, whether at home or work, in life, with family, as a mom.

Why you love what you do: It’s the thrill of watching the right remedy work on a client. Even after seven years of using homeopathy, I am still amazed at how well it works and how quickly it can work when you have the right solution, like with my son. Finding that right remedy is the main challenge. My job involves a lot of education of clients, because homeopathy offers a whole new way to look at health and illness. It requires active participation from the client to work well.

Biggest challenge: My biggest challenges are finding the time to run my own business and still be home with my kids at night as often as I can. I have been blessed with a lot of help in that area, so the kids are never shuffled off to babysitters, and anyone I’ve had come in the home has been like family. I decided a long time ago that my kids come first and business after, no matter how much I love what I do I have tried hard to maintain this.

The next challenge is with the economy. People are not used to having to pay for their medical care, even if in the long run it will improve their health and make the bills (for medication etc.) less. Homeopathy is just now being regulated by the government, so insurance companies are just starting to cover it.

This is a major concern for most people, and I understand that. I have also seen homeopathy change people’s health so much that the cost is not even a consideration. My son, for example, had five months of treatment (one visit a month) over the cost of puffers, doctor visits, and other illnesses for the last eight years.

Indulgences: My favorite food is chocolate of course! But if we are trying to be healthy I would say…avocadoes. We try to eat a mostly organic, or hormone-free diet, when finances allow, and have really enjoyed having an organic food box delivered – better choices then most grocery stores and decent price.

TV time: I like mystery shows, where you have to figure things out, like House and Medium. And a good laugh like Two and a Half Men.

Keri has been my homeopath for the last several months. I’d never been to a homeopath before but I had long wanted to see one and had even considered taking the courses to become one myself.

Keri has helped me in so many ways – the homeopathic way treats mind, body and spirit. Keri spends all the time you need on your health, there’s no such thing as a “only 2 issues per visit” like allopathic doctor’s offices. Keri really cares and she goes out of her way for her patients. Something I haven’t seen an allopathic doctor bother with in the last 15 years.

    Keri, you rock!

I’m always thrilled to read stories of people who pursue ‘alternative’ avenues to the ‘typical’ route. I delivered both my children at home with a midwife and people usually look at me like I’m crazy!

I’ve never been to a Homeopathic practitioner, but if I ever need to I will call Keri!

Thanks for sharing your story…hopefully it allows others to think about all the possibilities that we have at our disposal.
