Almost back to regular programming
I drove home from my parents’ this morning and noticed the leaves on the giant maple trees that line the road between our house and theirs are tipped in red and orange. Just a hint of colour, but enough to remind us all that fall is creeping in.
A friend this week said the fall feels like the start of a new year for her, and I could not agree more.![]()
Lucy returns to daycare on Wednesday, and Alice joins her Thursday (more on this later). I have a new venture on the go that I hope will become The Job (along with this site and that one). Eric just marked his one year anniversary at work; he’s celebrating by getting his vasectomy next Friday.
All this to say our lives will soon have a semblance of normalacy, structure and rhythm again, and it cannot come soon enough. I have loved having these weeks (10 of them! TEN! 10! 10!) with my girls, but I am officially burnt out. I’m horribly unorganized, scatterbrained, 60+ emails deep in my inbox, full of ideas and blog posts but no energy or time to act on them, and I’m not joking when I say you don’t want to know how long it’s been since the upstairs bathroom was cleaned.
I’m edgy and jittery and grumpy. It’s starting to keep me up at night.
But we’re almost there.
We have a great weekend of family, friends and food planned to send off summer. Hope you do, too.

I don’t even know what normal is anymore, it’s been so long since we’ve had a normal “anything”. I hope your return to a regular routine and some peace comes quickly – there’s nothing worse than when you feel have no control over anything.
I, however, am soooooooooooo looking forward to date night with my Husband on Saturday for my birthday. Thanks to Colin (!!), we plan on having a nice night out – finally!
The fall colours always make me sad for some reason. I think they’re exceptionally beautiful and love the changing season, but it reminds me that winter is in the wing and I hate the bad weather that comes with it.
Have a great weekend Carly et al. Tell Eric to get the bag of peas ready!
Ohhhhhhhh I love fall… I am 100% a fall girl. Big sweatshirts, long walks through the woods (that fall smell in the air), our second child has his birthday is in the fall, pumpkin pie and apple picking. I don’t like the start of school and handing 2 of my 4 over… sigh. I do, however, love the back to school shopping… there is something about the smell of new crayons???
Carly… you sound excited!!! Wishing you the best with the new venture.
I know what you mean about the fall being a new start-I think it has something to do with back to school time. I’m happy to hear you might have a new job!
Can’t wait to hear about the new “job”.
Hey, isn’t your durham daycare site a year old on Tuesday? Happy Anniversary!
ooooo…new adventure? I’m anxious to hear what you have in store!
Poor Eric. I remember John walking ever so slowly for a few days after his little snip snip. I also seem to remember a 2 yr old little girl running and leaping into her daddy’s lap as he was resting. The ROAR of OUCH DAMMIT! was kind of funny. Here’s hoping he sails through his operation!
You’ll get there. Don’t worry about the email inbox…just breathe and relax! I love the fall –the first day of school is like my new yrs.
Hi Carly, I’ve been following you… I mean your blog now and then for a while (I’m on dial up… so blog surfing can often take more time than I have). I enjoy rreading you though, when I can. I used to live in Oshawa (long ago, I went to Durham College). I like all the local info and resources you include for your readers!
I can relate to the edgy jittery and grumpy…While I so love vacation and free time for weeks on end, I really need to get back to my routine in September. It makes me feel secure again, like a warm blanket and being curled up in front of a toasty fire.
Can hardly wait to hear about The Job!
Enjoy your Autumn!
Thanks for the note, Carrie! It’s always nice to hear from readers. I’ve bookmarked your site now.
