Fleeting perfection: A poem

Lucy is colouring her birthday party invitations.

Alice is sitting on the floor at her feet playing with circus Lego.

Spencer is snoring on the couch.

There are blueberry oatmeal muffins in the oven.

I just did a sink of dishes.

And unloaded the dishwasher.

While sipping a hot cup of Empress tea (I love you, Pat!).

I’m dressed in a pink cardigan and polo shirt.

(No slacks, though. Or pearls.)

I feel like a Stepford Wife.

Or maybe June Cleaver.

At least for a few minutes.

Because now

Alice is at my knee.

And she has let loose the mother of all poops.

(The leaky kind, judging by the circle of wet on the back of her thigh.)

Lucy is screeching because her ponytail is blue and not pink.

Spencer is barking at the melting snowman in the backyard.

And my muffins fell when they came out of the oven.

Bliss.

For a moment.

There’s nothing in the world that crushes me more than when I’m super stoked about the baking in the oven, only to have it ruined at the last minute. Mine usually burn when one or all of my darling housemates distracts me by yelling or fighting or needing to be parented.

Something always brings us back to reality! LOL

How are the girls when you are on the computer? I imagine it is hard to keep up a blog with them running about. Cameron asks me to check his “email” then he proceeds to turn the computer monitor on and off so I don’t actually get anything accomplished.

On a side note, have you heard from Doodles Mom? I haven’t seen any comments from her of late and I have been thinking of her and her family (even though I only know of her from this site). Maybe I’ll try to look up her blog. Hope all is well!!

    Hi April:

I’ve been posting updates on the blog. Looks like my boy may be coming home tomorrow. He had initial complications and it was the friggin scariest thing I’ve ever gone through, but he’s doing much better now and his numbers keep dropping (which is a good thing). I tease him that he thinks he’s so special because he has three kidneys now ;-) He’s going stir crazy in the hospital and the kids have that Noro virus that’s going around Durham so I have to keep them separated, but it will be good to have him home again. We miss him terribly.

Thank you for asking, it’s appreciated :)

No, silly — they fell in the middle! Instead of being all puffy.

I will be honest, dinner always tastes a little better if I am wearing my pearls and apron when I make it :)
